The Schneider Museum of Art is pleased to announce that Storm Tharp, a participating artist in the Portland2016: A Biennial of Contemporary Art exhibition, has arrived on the Southern Oregon University (SOU) campus for a month-long artist-residency. The artist will provide a public lecture in SOU’s Meese Auditorium on Monday, October 3 at 3:30 PM. Admission is free.

Storm Tharp works and lives in Portland, where he creates the characters in his mysterious paintings. He was raised in Ontario, OR and attended Cornell University, graduating from the College of Architecture, Art and Urban Planning in 1992. He is a painter and sculptor whose work has been acquired by various public collections including The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Albight Knox Gallery and The Cleveland Art Museum. In 2010, Storm participated in The Whitney Biennial and in 2013, a mid-career survey of his work was presented at The Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, NY. He is represented by PDX Contemporary Art and Galerie Sébastian Bertrand.

Dante Fumagalli is a senior at Southern Oregon University studying English and Art History. He is passionate about education, the arts, and accessibility.
EB: Tell us a little bit about your internship at MoMA.
DF: I interned with the education department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City from June 8 to August 12. My time was specifically split between Community and Access Programs; School and Teacher Programs; and Interpretation, Research, and Digital Learning.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — A former Miss America pageant winner has scored another honor.
The Miss America Foundation announced Monday that Katie Harman Ebner has been named the inaugural recipient of its new Former Miss America Discretionary Scholarship.
The scholarship was established to help former pageant winners who still need financial assistance in completing their education after their 10-year scholarship window expires.
Ebner was Miss America 2002. She will receive up to $10,000 in scholarship assistance to continue her studies at Southern Oregon University’s renowned Oregon Center for the Arts.

Free screenings of a series of six film noir classics in the garden at Hearsay Restaurant in Ashland kick off Tuesday, Aug. 23, with “Scarlet Street,” a 1945 film directed by Fritz Lang starring Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett and Dan Duryea.
The series, dubbed “Trigger Warnings: A Celebration of Film Noir,” is hosted by Southern Oregon University professor of noir literature Bobby Arellano. Austin Gurwell, a former student of his, co-curates.

Lora Schlesinger Gallery presents Flowers from Mars, a series of small-scaled paintings by Laurel Bustamante. Like Persian miniatures, Bustamante’s paintings are elaborate and enticing. Flowers from Mars combines carefully painted human-interpreted flora with otherworldly environments.

The Schneider Museum of Art is taking part in what has been dubbed “Oregon’s largest art show.” The museum on Southern Oregon University’s Ashland campus is exhibiting the diverse work of five artists through Sept. 17 as part of “Portland2016: A Biennial of Contemporary Art.” Previous biennials were staged in Portland. This year, organizers have expanded the reach of the exhibit of 34 emerging and established Oregon artists and artist teams to stretch from Astoria to Ashland and as far east as La Grande.

The moods of Crater Lake, from the explosive sounds of its creation to the gentle stillness of a winter morning, were evoked this morning in the world premiere of a musical composition called “Natural History.” The setting couldn’t have been more natural, the open spaces at The Watchman, which overlooks Crater Lake, the focus of the work by New York City composer Michael Gordon. The work was commissioned by Britt Music & Arts Festival, and Gordon spent time visiting Crater Lake National Park last summer and winter to develop an appreciation for the lake and its history.
