The Rover by Aphra Behn — The Rover stands as Behn’s most successful play. Witty, raunchy, and topical, this comedy follows sisters, Florinda and Hellena, as they go to Carnival in pursuit of love. Set in Spanish held Naples, the sisters, masquerading, find themselves entangled with a small band of exiled English cavaliers. Mistaken identities, jilting lovers, and old customs collide as these young women set about to marry. Scholars point to strong feminist themes throughout the work, and see the play, in part, as a study of the different ways women strived to define themselves during the late seventeenth century.
